How to Calculate Your Curtain Width
Your curtain width needs to cover the window and allow for waves if desired.
1. Measure the Base Width
Your base width is the total area you want the curtains to cover. This must be at least the width of your window.
- Recommendation: Measure the width of your window, then add 20 cm to each side.
- Alternatively, use the full width of your curtain rail.
2. Add Extra for Waves/Fullness
If you want the curtains to have natural folds or “waves” when closed, you need extra fabric.
- For a Wavy Look: Multiply your base width by 1.5 (or add 50% more).
Example Calculation
Let’s say your window is 140 cm wide.
Calculate Base Width: 140 cm (window) + 20 cm (left side) + 20 cm (right side) = 180 cm
Add for Waves: 180 cm (base width)×1.5=270 cm
The total required fabric width is 270 cm.
Order Your Curtains:
For one single curtain: Order 270 cm wide.
For two curtains (to meet in the middle): Divide the total width by two. 270 cm/2=135 cm. Order two curtains, each 135 cm wide.
How to Calculate Your Curtain Height
Here is a simple way to figure out the right length for your curtains, depending on the look you want.
1. Find the Total Height
Measure the entire distance from the very top of your curtain rail (or the rings/loops where the curtain will hang) straight down to the floor.
2. Choose Your Style and Adjust
Now, subtract or add a few centimeters based on how you want the curtains to hang:
| Style | Look | Adjustment |
| Just Touching | Curtains just graze the floor. (Classic, tailored look.) | Subtract 1 cm |
| Above the Floor | Curtains hang slightly off the floor. (Clean, practical look.) | Subtract 2 cm |
| Puddled/On the Floor | Curtains pool beautifully on the floor. (Luxurious, dramatic look.) | Add 5 cm to 15 cm |
Example Calculation
Let’s say your measurement from the rail to the floor is 250 cm.
- If you choose the “Above the Floor” style: 250 cm (total height) – 2 cm = 248 cm
- Your final required curtain height is 248 cm.
